 23rd International Competition YOUNG VIRTUOSO, Zagreb 2017, violin 
February 15th - 19th, 2017

COMPETITION REGULATIONS

1. The 23rd International Competition YOUNG VIRTUOSO, Zagreb 2017, violin is organised by the Music School Pavao Markovac and under the patronage of The Zagreb City Assembly. The competition is going to take place from 15th to 19th of February, 2017. 

2. The competition is divided into five categories and  the Revue for the youngest candidates. Candidate's age is calculated according to the years he has turned until the date of the beginning of the competition, the 15th of February 2017.

  • Revue -         aged 9 and younger 
  • I. category -   aged 10 and younger
  • II. category -  aged 12 and younger
  • III. category - aged 15 and younger
  • IV. category - aged 18 and younger*
  • V. category -  aged 24 and younger*

*IV. and V. category are divided into two stages. The jury decides if the candidate has the right to perform in the second stage.

3. Programme

Revue / participation fee 20€ :

  • 2 compositions not longer than 6 minutes in total

I. category / participation fee 40€ :

  • obligatory etude: D. Bobić: Cin can cvrgudan (Five Međimurje Études, No.1)*
  • composition for the violin and piano by choice (it is possible to perform a concerto or a sonata movement) 

II. category / participation fee 40€ :

  • obligatory etude: D. Bobić: Ćuk sedi (Five Međimurje Études, No. 2)*
  • 1 etude by choice
  • composition for the violin and piano by choice (it is possible to perform a concerto or a sonata movement)

III. category / participation fee 50€ :

  • obligatory etude: D. Bobić: Grad se beli (Five Međimurje Études, No. 3)*
  • 2 etudes by choice or 1 etude by choice and a composition of a virtuoso character
  • composition for the violin and piano by choice (it is possible to perform a concerto or a sonata movement, or two contrast movements if the sonata is by an old master)

IV. category / participation fee 60€ :

I stage:

  • obligatory etude: D. Bobić: Vehni, vehni fijolica (Five Međimurje Études, No. 4)*
  • 1 etude by choice
  • J. S. Bach: 1 movement of sonata or partita from Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo

II stage:

  • composition for violin and piano by choice (it is possible to perform a concerto or a sonata movement, or two contrast movements if the sonata is by an old master)
  • composition of a virtuoso character

V. category / participation fee 60€ :

I stage:

  • obligatory etude: D. Bobić: Tu za repu, tu za len (Five Međimurje Études, No. 5)*
  • 1 etude or capriccio by choice
  • 1 capriccio by N. Paganini
  • J. S. Bach: Two movements from one of the sonatas for violin solo or Chaconne from the II Partita for violin solo

II stage:

  • Concerto from Beethoven on, 1st movement
  • composition of a virtuoso character

* Etudes (pieces) by Croatian composer Davor Bobić, composed specifically for this competition, will be available for informational purposes on this web site (HERE) from October 17th, 2016. Original sheet music will be available in the stores mentioned here

4. The entire programme has to be performed by heart, repetitions are not necessary. The jury listens to the programme as a whole.

5. The awarded contestants are obliged to attend the diploma and award giving ceremony, where all first-prize and special-prize winners will be performing. 

6. Awards

The «Revue» category is not of competitive character, and as such has no list of order; all participants get participation diplomas, and one participant, chosen by the jury, will perform at the final concert.

In other categories five prizes will be awarded, and the special awards. Winners of the special awards will be selected among all candidates from all categories. In each category, it is possible to assign several first prizes, several second prizes, several third prizes, several fourth prizes and several fifth prizes. In this case, the winners equally share the prize money.

I and II category 

  • I prize - 1.000,00 kn
  • II prize - 800,00 kn
  • III prize - 500,00 kn
  • IV prize - 350,00 kn
  • V prize – Diploma

III category 

  • I prize - 2.000,00 kn
  • II prize – 1.500,00 kn
  • III prize – 1.200,00 kn
  • IV prize - 800,00 kn
  • V prize – Diploma

IV and V category 

  • I prize -3.000,00 kn
  • II prize – 2.200,00 kn
  • III prize – 1.600,00 kn
  • IV prize – 1.000,00 kn
  • V prize – 550,00 kn

Special prizes awarded by the Zagreb City Assembly:

  • Absolute winner of the competition is awarded the Plaque of the City of Zagreb and the prize of 7.500,00 kn.
  • for the best performance of an etude or capriccio - 2.500,00 kn
  • for the best performance of the virtuoso piece - 2.500,00 kn

Other special prizes:

  • Croatian composers' society award for the best performance of the obligatory etude by the Croatian composer – work of art.
  • Prize EURO-UNIT group, Yamaha Music Hrvatska
  • Prize International Summer Music School Pučišća - free summer course Pučišća 2017.
  • Prize a - classic, Zagreb, International Summer School UZMAH - free summer course Milna 2017.
  • Prize of the Chamber orchestra Szekszárd, Hungary
  • Prize of the Festival Bled, special prize - master bow of Atelier Edgar Russ, Cremona

7. The application form has to be filled out in capital letters and sent by January 16th, 2017 to the following address:

  1. Application form, completed and signed. Programme the candidate has prepared for the competition, stating full names of the composers, opus of every piece and the exact duration of each and every composition 
  2. A receipt of paid participation fee
  3.  A copy of one of the following documents: candidate's passport, ID card, or birth certificate.

8. All travelling and accommodation costs must be paid by the participants themselves.

9. The exact performance order in all categories is determined by the first letter of candidate's family name. The 23rd International Competition Young Virtuoso, Zagreb 2017, violin, begins with the letter M.

10. The organizer of the competition will accord the candidates rooms for preparation for one hour before the performance, according to the posted schedule.

11. The competition is public and will be taped. The organizer has the right to use and reproduce the recordings without compensation.

12. The results will be announced after each category ends. Every candidate will receive Certificate for participation.

The winners will be awarded diplomas and prizes at the final concert.

13. Prize-winners are obliged to perform at the final concert without any financial retribution; otherwise they lose the right to the prize.

14. The programme of the final concert is set by the Jury and it can not be changed.

15. Winners of the first prizes in a former competition can't compete in the same category.

16. Absolute winners of former competitions YOUNG VIRTUOSO - Etudes and scales  have no right to compete again.

17. The Jury is composed of eminent world and Croatian violinists and pedagogues.

18. Decision of the Jury is final.

19. The organizer disclaims all responsibility in case of injury or any accidents that may befall participants of the Competition (active and passive participants, teachers / mentors, organizers, as well as all the other guests who find themselves in the premises where the event is held) and damage or theft of their property .

20. Organizer Pavao Markovac Music School reserves the right to modify these Regulations.

21. Should there be any doubts in understanding the Rules, the Croatian explanation will be taken into account.

22. By applying to the competition, all competitors accept the stated rules.
